How do we impact the network and ecosystem that we live and work in?

Anything we do affects everything we do. Systems thinking is a powerful way to assure that design is accountable to the earth as much as it is to a client.

Bold Environmental Stewardship

The University of California Merced 2020 Project is on course to achieve an ambitious triple Net Zero commitment of zero net energy use, zero landfill waste, and zero greenhouse gas emissions upon project completion.

As part of this goal, Mahlum’s three 2020 campus buildings (Glacier Point Residence Hall, El Portal Residence Hall, and the Conference Center) all achieved LEED Platinum certification. The design emphasizes strategies that minimize resource demand in each of the abovementioned areas. The buildings were designed to block strong winds and control solar access into adjacent courtyards, allowing the integrated live/learn environment within the buildings to extend into these outdoor spaces.
