Bold Environmental Stewardship
The University of California Merced 2020 Project is on course to achieve an ambitious triple Net Zero commitment of zero net energy use, zero landfill waste, and zero greenhouse gas emissions upon project completion.
As part of this goal, Mahlum’s two 2020 campus buildings 1B (Glacier Point) & 3D Residence Halls are designed to achieve LEED Gold certification with an emphasis on strategies that minimize resource demand in each of these three key areas. Buildings were designed to block strong winds and control solar access into adjacent courtyards, allowing the integrated live/learn environment within the buildings to extend into these outdoor spaces.
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”
