Arrayed sculpturally as a series of boulders in a Japanese garden, two massive, reinforced concrete enclosures house radiation oncology treatment equipment. These copper-encased vaults complement an important garden court adjacent to the site. Inside the buildings, connection to nature is further reinforced with clerestory windows that saturate the interior with daylight and a waiting area that opens out visually onto the garden. Within treatment areas, artwork serves an integral role in the patient experience, including star fields that stretch across the ceiling domes and music to provide a soothing experience throughout the treatment cycle. Local artists collaborated with the design team early on to assure that we used every opportunity to create an uplifting environment in this technically demanding, world-class facility.
