Truman High School

Owner: Federal Way Public Schools
Scope: 23,300 SF
Notable: Recognized nationally as an exemplary alternative learning center design

Designed to serve at-risk teens typically one step away from dropping out of school, the Truman High School supports small learning teams and reinforces personal connections within a uniquely open environment. The building is comprised of two semi-independent schools that accommodate 100 students each within a light-filled, adaptable shell. Large multi-purpose areas host social activities and reinforce emphasis on school community. Individual student workstations facilitate personalized, project-based learning. Defined by partial height walls, six advisories radiate out from the central workspace to support structured group discussion. Shared resources join the schools, and two site partners — King County Boys and Girls Club, and Headstart Daycare — provide complementary facilities to create a vibrant community hub.
